Webquest

Tom’s Journey from High School to College

The Webquest is a fantastic teaching tool. It initially forces the creator to increase their knowledge of the subject matter. It allows you to elegantly present a large amount of information in a controlled environment. This type of lesson has a place in every teachers bag of tricks.

1. A Webquest teaches students how to approach large topics.
2. A Webquest presents locations for future student research.
3. A Webquest engages a student in the search for answers.
4. A Webquest provides a significant amount of tertiary learning.
5. A Webquest offers teachers another way to engage different types of learners.

MAT Video 2 "Teachng with Technology"

"Teaching with Technology" offers any instructor insight into the process of adding technology to lectures. The Smart Board, Prezi, Youtube, Windows Movie Maker and other technologies are used to show how technology should be implemented in a teacher's lecture development process. I used the following process to develop "Teaching with Technology":

  1. I developed a plan of action.
  2. I prepared my technology by creating a short video with Windows Movie Maker, uploading it to Youtube, and building a Prezi with the embedded video.
  3. I prepared for filming by experimenting with the smartboard.
  4. I filmed the rough footage of me presenting the prepared technology with a Flip HD camera.
  5. I converted the MP4 video to a WMV format using Any Video Converter.
  6. I edited the video, added titles, credits, effects, and transitions using Windows Movie Maker.
  7. Finally, I rendered the movie, uploaded it to Youtube, and embedded it into this blog.

MAT Video 1

This video was designed to show both my journey as a father and who I believe most needs the help to "Bridge the College Gap". The following steps were used to create the video:

  • I developed a concept of showing my return home from the Army and my transition into a civic leader.
  • I filmed my son demonstrating his skill in "free-running" and driving a manual transmission.
  • I also filmed transition shots to illustrate my journey.
  • I selected music and still photos that complemented my video concept.
  • Then it was time to move to Windows Movie Maker.
  • I edited the video and arranged the photos.
  • I then added transitions, overlays, titles, and credits.
  • I placed down a music track, and added narration to define the journey.
  • Finally, I rendered the film and uploaded it to Youtube.

Video can be used to help a student improve their instructing style:

1. The creation of a video is a great way for students to get their hands on subject matter.
2. A video is a fun way to present material in a new way.
3. An edited lecture uploaded on Youtube gives an absent student an opportunity to get the same information as their peers.
4. In adult education a well tailored video can be used to train subject matter to geographically separated students.
5. A video can save an adult educator's time by providing information on repetitive subjects that do not need interaction.

PREZI

Prezi URL: http://prezi.com/_0e6-hsmk3yx/political-chauvinism/

Prezi is a powerful alternative to Powerpoint. My Prezi is embedded through HTML and the URL is linked. Here are a few tips on how a teacher or in my case an adult educator can utilize Prezi.

1. Prezi is a great tool to teach students to edit simultaneously in real time.
2. Prezi is a great way to present content in a real time online seminar.
3. Prezi is a great way to engage the visual learner during a lecture.
4. Prezi is a great way to provide a presentation to a student not available during a lecture.
5. Prezi is a great way to connect complex ideas.

Power Point Presentation

This  link directs you to the Google document Powerpoint presentation which provides a Youtube version of an embedded video.

The presentation with the embedded video, and video are downloaded to the Angel drop box.

Teachers can use Powerpoint to further the education of their students in the following ways.
1. Powerpoint can be used to present a lesson to visual learners.
2. Powerpoint can be used to organize the flow of a lecture.
3. Powerpoint can be used to provide an alternate way for a student to receive a  missed lecture.
4. Powerpoint can be used as study material for students prior to an examination.
5. Powerpoint can be used to compile a large array of technologies into a single lesson package.

How can we use technology to get average high school students to college

I am passionate about getting high school students to college. Average students seem to be lost in a transition vortex. Smart and capable middle-class students are seemingly left to make this journey alone. These students are in cyberspace; I think they need a map...

As future educators, how do you think you can use technology to help guide your students to college? How can a teacher help students "Bridge the College Gap"?

Tips how to use a blog as a teacher:
1. You can use a blog as an ongoing webquest for students. This helps with continued engagement in a subject.
2. You can use a blog as an individual class tracker. Students can see assignments or projects. They can then ask questions or offer thoughts. This will help focus their efforts.
3. Individual student blogs can replace "journals" for students. The tech connection may help students engage.
4. A blog can be used to present the important lesson points during lectures. This gives students a place to study for tests, and a place to look for meaning if they missed class.
